What does the Legal Ombudsman upheld rate mean?
The Legal Ombudsman (LeO) is the independent body investigating complaints from consumers about solicitors. A complaint is upheld when the ombudsman finds the firm did something wrong. The upheld rate is the percentage of resolved complaints decided in the client's favour.
Important: what matters is the proportion upheld, not the raw count. A firm with 10 complaints and 8 upheld (80%) is more concerning than one with 200 complaints and 40 upheld (20%).
What does 25–30% + VAT mean for your compensation?
Most claimant firms operate on a conditional fee agreement (no win, no fee). If you win, the firm deducts this percentage from your compensation before paying you. VAT is charged on top of the fee at 20%.
Example: £5,000 won at 25% + VAT
Firm fee: 25% × £5,000 = £1,250 | VAT on fee: £250 | Total deducted: £1,500
You receive: £3,500 (70% of compensation)
For motor finance and financial mis-selling claims, you can submit for free via the Financial Ombudsman Service.
Benchmarking of the UK's claimant law firms. Data sourced from SRA Register, Trustpilot, Google Reviews, Legal Ombudsman decisions, Companies House, and the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. No paid placements. No referral fees.

NEGATIVE
